15 Tips For Maximizing Your Xbox 360!

Let me be quick and simple.. the following will show you 15 tips you can do for your Xbox 360 to maximize it!

Let's get started..

Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter

1. Don't leave your system on for more than six hours. Your TV will have a 'burnt' picture as a result. This is also another cause of the red ring of death.

2. Your Xbox 360 is able to store music files, ripping the music from a CD. The readable disks are CD, CD-R and CD-W.

3. If you play music while playing a game at the same time, it will result in low volume sound effects. It's best if you lower your music a bit by using the XMP - Xbox Media Player.

4. If people are annoying you on MSN, set your status to 'Away', 'Busy', or even 'Appear Offline'. It makes your friends not talk to you. Just go the Guide-button, then 'Personal Options'. You can change your status from there.

5. Make sure that your batteries or rechargeable batteries are fully juiced for maximum playing! Nobody wants a dead controller in the climax of a game! The Play and Charge Kit is a great accessory to have for those hardcore gamers!

6. The hard drive is detachable, and can be placed on any Xbox 360. Simply detach and your good to go!

7. USB sticks are used to store your gaming stuff as well! The higher the memory, the more the storage space!

8. You are allowed to change your gamertag. Go to your profile on the Xbox 360 Dashboard and "Edit Gamer Profile". Then click "Gamertag". This is a great option, however it will cost 800 MP - Microsoft points.

9. You don't have to send a message to just your friends. Just know the person's gamertag and send the message via the Dashboard!

10. Charge your Xbox 360 controller! This tip sounds stupid, but some people are lazy so might as well!

11. Wireless controllers are awesome! You can go into your kitchen and still be within range! (30 Feet is the max. by the way!)

12. Your Xbox 360 never turns off whenever the Play-and-Charge kit is in use. Your console is in stand-by mode, where low power is used, and the fans are still functioning. When the charging is complete, the 360 turns off the fans, but it still is in Stand-By mode.

13. You can link your Xbox 360 to two screens at the same time! Put the cable's switch to standard def., but connect the composite line to one screen and the component (Red, Green, Blue) cables to another. [NOTE: This is NOT going to produce HD]

14. It can write it's own blog! Seriously. All you do is sign up for 360voice.com. Your Xbox 360 then starts blogging! You don't have to do it for it! It's so amazing! It also has options of challenging a friend or starting a group or clan!

15. You can link your Xbox 360 to your wireless adaptor, without a Microsoft adapter! You just need a laptop with a wi-fi connection. Just go to Control Panel - Manage Network Connections (Vista). Then pick the Local Area Connection and the Wireless Network Connection directly. Now, right-click and then select 'bridge connections'. After this, you disconnect and reconnect the wireless network, then connect a network cable from the laptop to the Xbox 360. You might have to take away the bridge (repeat the above technique and you will notice the option), whenever you would like to surf the Internet on the laptop.

Tip #15 was brought to you by this website. Thanks guys!

Thanks for reading the fifteen tips for maximizing your Xbox 360! I hope you enjoyed and implemented some of them! I look forward to talking to you soon!

Network Switch - The Basics

The network switch plays an integral role in enterprise and home networking, yet many people confuse what the purpose of the equipment is, and how it differs from a router. I decided to write this blog post to explain the basics of the switch - from different types, to vendors for purchasing them.

A brief overview of network switches

A network switch is a type of computer networking hardware that bridges network segments. It is sometimes referred to as a packet switch or simply a switch. The switch plays an important component in most local area networks (LAN), including mid-to-large enterprise networks which utilize several linked managed switches.

A switch is far less sophisticated than a router. Although routers and switches look fairly similar in appearance, routers differ substantially in their internal components.

Types of network switches

Unmanaged Switches: This is typically the least expensive type of switch, most often found in homes or small offices. They are very simple, employing plug and play technology, lacking any specific configuration options

Managed Switches: Managed Switches provide optional configuration options and allow for a great variety of functionality. There are several ways to operate these switches, from utilizing a remote tool like Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), to accessing the switch via a command line interface like Telnet.
Smart Switches: Smart switches differ from fully managed switches in that they only allow a specific set of modifications and functionality. Because users can only configure basics settings, they are often cheaper than the fully managed breed. Some basic functions often found on a smart switch are turning some particular port range on or off, link speed and duplex settings and priority settings for ports Enterprise Managed Switches: Enterprise switches are the more configurable and expensive version of managed switches. They are most often found in enterprise networks among several other switches. They are more efficient for large business where accessing a central administration module can save time and money. Some advanced functions for enterprise switches are VLAN settings, link aggregation and port mirroring.
Buying switches

There are several brand name switch manufacturers that provide competing and differentiated products, including Cisco, 3Com, and Alcatel. While switches can be purchased out of the box from online retailers, one way to save money is to find a used switch from an online reseller. A business purchaser can often save thousands of dollars purchasing used cisco or other brand name network hardware.

If you do decide to go the route of an online reseller, be sure to check for several qualifying factors to make sure they are a good fit. One factor is a good warranty, as it is always a risk to buy used equipment. Another is significant discounts (at least 50%) off of retail pricing. The third factor I recommend seeking in an online network hardware vendor is good customer support. The ability to speak to a human being for help with your purchase is underrated.

I hope this 'basic switch support' post helps out those that are confused or looking for a way to purchase a switch.

7 Easy Steps to Secure Your Wireless Router

Accessing Your Wireless Router's Configuration

To gain access to your wireless router settings and configuration menu then connect to the router either wirelessly or via a Ethernet cable. Open a web browser and type either:

[http://192.168.1.1] or[http://192.168.2.1]1) Change Admin password

Most wireless routers ship with a blank password. It is essential that this is changed else a potential hacker could get into your router configuration and lock you out of your own hardware.

2) Change The Network Name (otherwise known as the SSID)

The default network name is usually made up of the name/model of your wireless router. This information gives a head start for a hacker and makes it easier for them to break into your network. Don't rename it to something like your surname or house name as this unnecessarily exposes personal information. Rename it to an alpha-numeric string - this can be up to 32 characters long.

3) Turn off SSID broadcasting

By default, a wireless router's SSID is broadcast so anyone in the vicinity of your wireless router can see that it. SSID broadcasting can be turned off thus making your wireless router virtually invisible.

4) Enabling Encryption

This is switched off by default. There is a choice of WEP, WPA and WPA2. Currently the latest encryption method is WPA2 so use this where possible. Both your wireless router and wireless PC adaptor must be configured to use the same encryption.

5) Mac Address Control

All hardware has a unique MAC address associated with it, including your PC adaptor card. This MAC address can be added to access control list in the wireless router. Only devices added to the router's access control list are allowed to be connected.

6) Update router firmware

It is recommended that the latest router firmware is downloaded from the manufacturer's website and installed in the router. This will hopefully fix any bugs that have been found for your router and also help with any known security flaws in the router itself.

7) Backup settings

Finally, backup all router settings. If you reset the router back to its factory default settings for whatever reason, your configuration can later be easily and quickly restored back into the router.

Connect Your PS3 to the Internet - Wired and Wireless Techniques

The PlayStation 3 serves as a decent home entertainment console that lets you play hundreds of games as well as watch Blu-ray movies. However, you can really see the potential of the console when you connect your PS3 to the Internet. An Internet connection is required to access the PlayStation Network which is used to download games and play multiplayer games online. It also lets you surf online or use other online services like Netflix.

Your approach to the Internet will depend on how your PS3 is set up with the rest of your components. If your PS3 is placed near your router or modem, you can use the wired connectivity approach. Otherwise, going the wireless route is easier and more convenient if you have a wireless router or access point.

1. Plug the Ethernet cable that comes with your PS3 into the Ethernet jack on the back and plug the other end to one of the available ports on the router.

2. Make sure the router is connected to the access point via Ethernet if you want wireless access. This is not necessary if your router has built-in wireless functionality.

3. Turn on your PS3 and go to the "Settings" menu from the home screen. Go to "Network Settings" from there and head to "Internet Connection Settings." Select the "Yes" option to proceed. Use the "X" button on your controller to confirm any selections or choose an option.

4. Depending on your setup, select either "Wireless" or "Wired Connection." If you choose "Wired Connection," select the "Easy" option first and then select the "Test Connection" option to see if you have Internet. If you don't, choose the "Custom" option instead and ask your Internet Service Provider for assistance regarding the settings.

5. For wireless connections, select the "Scan" option and wait for the system to scan for any access points.

6. A list of SSID's should appear and one of them should represent the access point or wireless router that you have. Choose that SSID to connect.

7. If your wireless router requires a key, choose the type of encryption from the list. It must match the encryption used for the wireless router, so contact the person who set that router up if you do not understand this part. Enter the key afterward and test the connection using the "Test Connection" option.

8. If you have any problems, double check all the connections and confirm your router works with a laptop or desktop PC. Then try to access the admin panel. You can also try loading up a web browser to see if you have Internet connectivity. Otherwise, contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance.

How to Repair a Scratched Disc

Once you find out that your favorite movie is scratched, that is not a feeling that you ever want to experience again. People tend to develop special attachment to their DVD's for various reasons. One reason may be because you might have family recordings located on them from your childhood. Another reason folks are so fond of their priceless DVD's is just simply because a lot of people like to have a nice, scratch-free collection of DVD's. Finding scratches on your favorite DVD is more of a nuisance than anything else. Do not panic because there is hope. There is a way to repair your scratched DVD, game disc, or CD.

One wonderful way to go about a DVD repair is to purchase professional software. The software will take the data from the scratched disc, retrieving the unreadable images and tracing them into a fixed disc drive, therefore retrieving all that was lost due to the scratches. This is actually a highly preferred method for DVD, game disc, or CD repair.

Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter

If you do not prefer to purchase software and would much rather go with the do-it-yourself route, then a basic DVD repair kit may be the way to go. A DVD repair kit generally comes with everything that you will need to repair your DVD. The materials consist of a DVD cleaning solution and soft white clothes. In order for the repair process to begin, you must first squirt the DVD cleaning solution onto the scratches that are on the disc. Next, take your small white cloth and wipe the DVD using very small, straight strokes from the centre of disc outwards. Do not bear down too hard, this could cause further scuffing of the DVD, causing more harm than repair.

There is also a Do It Yourself way to repair a DVD. All you need is some alcohol and a piece of soft lint free cloth. Gently dab the cloth into the alcohol, being careful not to soak the cloth. After you have moderately dampened the cloth, take your DVD and rub the cloth on the disc around in a gentle and straight motion. This is a great method for removing most scratches. In place of alcohol, you may also use toothpaste, regular all-purpose house cleaners, and polishes to help repair your DVD, game disc, or CD.
